Cologne, June 29, 2015. The program offered by the state of North Rhine Westphalia reinforces the strategy of “Advancement NRW” to promote basic scientific research. The financial support will enable Dr. Roman-Ulrich Müller to carry out in-depth research as both nephrologist and CECAD scientist, allowing him to build up his own research group and pursue the translational goal of transferring the results of his research into the clinical practice of the future. The NRW award acknowledges the high quality of his scientific work as well as the innovative potential of the research project.
The team led by Dr. Müller, who is a specialist in internal medicine and nephrology in the Department of Internal Medicine II at Cologne University Hospital, will focus on molecular mechanisms regulating renal aging and acute kidney injury. As Dr. Müller says, “Aging-associated renal failure is one of the most important risk factors for cardiovascular disease including stroke, cardiac failure and heart attack. By taking a molecular biology approach to highly relevant clinical problems, we are breaking new grounds for urgently needed preventive and therapeutic strategies.. Our ultimate goal is to translate the results of our research into clinical practice.”
The new research group will make another important contribution to CECAD’s international aging research and the Cluster’s commitment to translational medicine – with cutting-edge research and transfer of the results to optimize treatment in clinical practice.
The fact that two other scientists from the University Hospital Cologne have also been selected for the program only serves to emphasize the excellence of the research community in Cologne.
