New master’s degree programme for organic food production at the University of Kassel

The course of study covers the complete supply chain for sustainable food production from the farm to the individual consumer’s plate on the table. Students in the programme complete semesters at their home university as well as at least one and up to three semesters at international partner universities. The partner universities are located in Lyon (France), Aarhus (Denmark), Ghent (Belgium) and Cluj-Napoca (Romania). The University of Kassel is participating in the joint degree course of study together with the Fulda University of Applied Sciences.

The faculty of Organic Agricultural Sciences at Kassel University is the only university faculty worldwide that specializes exclusively in organic agriculture. It introduced the first university course of study in the world in this field 20 years ago. In the meantime besides the „Sustainable Food Systems“ degree programme, the Organic Agricultural Sciences faculty offers a bachelor’s degree programme and three master’s programmes as well as a dual work-study course in agriculture.

„With this new, internationally oriented master’s degree programme we are able to expand our spectrum with a premium offering,“ commented Dean of Studies Prof. Dr. Angelika Ploeger happily on the new development. „Through the mandatory stay at a foreign university our students will expand their scientific and personal horizons. At the same time with this offering we recognise the fact that food production and markets increasingly involve close international relations and connections.“

Students who complete the new course of study will be learning about the most modern technologies for sustainable production and processing of food. This brings together agricultural and nutritional sciences as well as technological and business knowledge. Possible employers for graduates of the programme will be organic food producers or also associations or authorities active in the field.

Information for applying to the programme in the winter semester 2015/2016 is available until 1 April 2015 at: http://www.susfoods.eu/
