With a number of 53 international exhibitors, the Product Market „High-tech for Medical Devices“, initiated by the IVAM Microtechnology Network, is the largest joint pavilion at COMPAMED – and fully booked. The exhibitors come from Germany, Switzerland, France, the USA, the Netherlands, Austria, Great Britain, Greece and Spain. The IVAM area is located in hall 8a and showcases various solutions for medical technology – all in 700sqm of space. The key technologies to these solutions are microtechnology, nanotechnology, photonics, MEMS and advanced materials.
This year, the international companies and research institutes present miniaturized components and high-tech microelectronics, smart sensors for digitalization, solutions for systems integration, ultra-precise tool-making and functional coatings as well as measuring and screening processes that constantly make medical technology products smarter, safer, cheaper and more reliable.
Additionally, the COMPAMED HIGH-TECH Forum, organized by IVAM, offers insight into research and development of the exhibited processes and products, explains technology trends and provides information on relevant foreign markets. This year, for instance a France session will take place. The COMPAMED HIGH-TECH Forum offers international presentations on all trade show days in hall 8a, booth G40.
Sensor technologies for diagnostics, monitoring and therapy
ams is a global leader in the design and manufacture of advanced sensor solutions. The CMOS Imaging Sensors presented by ams Sensors Germany GmbH feature global and rolling shutter, low noise, high dynamic range and high frame rates through high-speed on-chip ADC and digital interfaces. ams‘ image sensors serve a broad range of applications for medical technology and other markets. The ams portfolio also includes miniature camera modules for endoscopy-like applications, namely the award winning NanEye displaying at the COMPAMED show.
CiS Forschungsinstitut für Mikrosensorik GmbH develops technologies for customized optoelectronic, piezoresistive and impedimetric sensors. Among the novelties are optical sensors for continuous monitoring of the blood pressure without a cuff. The sensor uses methods of pulse wave analysis in a photoplethysmogram and is manufactured on the MORES technology platform of the research institute. Blood pressure data will be determined based on a patented mathematical algorithm. Also presented the first time at COMPAMED are piezoresistive MEMS pressure transducers, which can be used in invasive clinical sensors.
As a leading manufacturer of physical, chemical and biological sensors, Innovative Sensor Technology IST AG presents its sensor portfolio, consisting of thin and thick film platinum and nickel RTD temperature sensors, thermal mass flow sensors, capacitive humidity sensors, humidity modules, conductivity sensors and biosensors. These sensors are characterized by their accuracy and consistency in various measurement conditions. They are applied in measuring instruments for medical and various other applications.
In biosensors, enzymes are enabling the specific measurement of particular substances even in complex mixtures like whole blood. Cost-effective manufacture and factory-calibration enable single-use applications with highest application reliability. By using Jobst Technologies GmbH‘s flow-through biosensor chips, glucose and lactate can either be analyzed with a rate of 48 samples per hour in analyzers, or be monitored simultaneously like in the first continuous glucose & lactate monitor for critically ill patients (EIRUS, Getinge).
Sensirion AG, expert for safe and reliable medical applications, is presenting its innovative sensors for the measurement and control of gas and liquid flows, differential pressure, humidity, temperature and gas (VOC) at COMPAMED. This year’s product highlights are a new liquid flow sensor for the measurement of ultra-low flow rates in drug delivery applications (infusion) and single-use and autoclavable flow sensors for proximal flow measurements in ventilation and anesthesia. Both sensors are available as versions for neonatal and pediatric applications.
Silicon Microstructures (SMI), Inc.’s Cobra product line is the first commercially-available pressure sensor with attached cable that fits into 1-French devices. The sensors are small (220 microns wide), stable (drift in 37C saline <1mmHg per hour) and smart (a temperature-compensated, digital or amplified analog version is available). The presentation at COMPAMED will demonstrate how this sensor assembly can simplify or provide risk reduction in urodynamics, endourology, cardiology, emergency surgery, intracranial pressure monitoring and other procedures.
Surface solutions, advanced materials and implants
At COMPAMED 2017 Coatema Coating Machinery GmbH will present the New Easycoater, an extraordinarily precise sheet-to-sheet lab coating and printing line used for high-precision coating and printing of sheet substrates. In addition, Coatema introduces the Nanoimprint coating line for highly innovative roll-to-roll manufacturing of micro- and nanostructured surfaces as they are often used in latest biomedical sensors.
Surfix BV presents its state-of-the-art surface coatings for the micro- and nanotechnology market. The material-selective and local surface modification offers accurate and precise control of surface properties. With multiple functionalities like hydrophobic, hydrophilic, anti-biofouling and biofunctionalization on various inorganic and polymeric surfaces and even inside microfluidic channels, Surfix helps to exploit the full potential of its clients’ devices.
SCS – Specialty Coating Systems will be exhibiting Parylene conformal coating services at COMPAMED. SCS Parylene coatings are biocompatible, biostable and offer excellent moisture, chemical and dielectric barrier properties to many medical devices, including stents, catheters, pacemakers, needles and mandrels, and to pharmaceutical containers and applications as well. Ultra-thin and perfectly conformal, Parylene coatings are ideal for advancing medical technologies.
Many medical applications are using the advantage of micro- and nanostructured surfaces. temicon GmbH offers the complete technology range needed for the processing and the serial production of functional surfaces by injection molding or roll imprint. Typical products are nebulizer nozzles with micrometer holes for the generation of aerosols, microstructured titerplates for stem cells differentiation, conic micromembranes for filtering of cells, or anti-bacterial surfaces. In addition, temicon offers injection mold inserts and injection molding service for the production of micro- or nanostructured polymer parts.
Individually adapted implants, which are completely integrated into the body and, in the long term, are replaced by the own bone substance: this is made possible by a new hybrid shaping technique developed at Fraunhofer Institute for Ceramic Technologies and Systems IKTS. The patient-specific, hard bone shell comes out of the 3D printer. The spongy inner structure is simulated by a ceramic freeze foam, which is proven to support cell growth and is pressure-resistant and bioactive, too.
Following the vision of taking implantable technologies to the next level CorTec GmbH provides innovative solutions that enable highly efficient personalized therapies. Based on their flexible technologies they offer individualized components of active implants such as electrodes or hermetic encapsulations. CorTec is located in Freiburg, Germany and will soon move to a new facility with its own cleanroom production site.
Precise microfluidic systems for analytical instrumentation
HNP Mikrosysteme GmbH produces micro annular gear pumps. These pumps are ideally used where fast and highly precise dosage is required. Five series guarantee a flow rate from 1 µl/h to 1152 ml/min. mzr-pumps are characterized by low pulse delivery, minimal dead volume, long service life, small dimensions, powerful materials and ease of maintenance. HNPM offers development of OEM pumps, comprehensive application-specific consulting and technical support. Application possibilities are, amongst others, in the field of life science and analytical instrumentation.
Having built up experience working on thousands of R&D as well as large-scale projects, microLIQUID S.L. has developed a unique combination of skills including microfluidic design, nano- and microfabrication, polymer sciences and automated assembly, all of which have been set to work in mass production facilities. microLIQUID also develops and manufactures fully automated analyzer systems and drug delivery equipment focused on diagnostic and pharmaceutical markets.
Micronit GmbH is a key supplier of microfluidic devices to life sciences and chemistry markets worldwide and has been manufacturing microfluidic components for more than 15 years. These products are used in DNA analysis, as medical tests, as components for analytical instrumentation and space technology. Micronit has extensive experience in micromachining, microfluidics and MEMS and is a dedicated research and development partner for both science and industry.
Lab-on-a-chip (LOC) systems are microfluidic systems equipped with electro-chemical micro pumps, bio sensors and partly heating devices and controlled by miniaturized electronics. Up to 15 pumps and 4 heating components work on one cartridge. In addition to LOC the Fraunhofer Institute for Electronic Nano Systems ENAS will exhibit two-axes acceleration sensors for integration in implants that are fabricated in BDRIE technology with a complete size of 1.2 x 1.5 mm². They will also present the project Sens-o-Spheres, where a system for wireless inductive charging of spheres for bioreactors was developed.

Development and production services for new product integration or re-design for medical devices from class 1 to class 3 are the major expertise of AEMtec GmbH. AEMtec provides a wide range of assembly and packaging technologies in cleanroom environment (Wafer Back-End Services, CoB, Flip Chip, SMT) and Box Built. Through longstanding experience AEMtec has positioned itself as a reliable partner for the manufacture of products with a high level of integrity and reliability. AEMtec is ISO 13485 certified.
The colorPol polarizers displayed by CODIXX AG are characterized by a high transmission up to 99%, an exceptional contrast ratio of more than 105:1, resistance against UV-radiation and most chemicals, operating temperatures from -50 to +400 °C, and durable glass; still they are as thin as foil polarizers. This makes colorPol perfect for every use, whether as a single part in laboratories or a serial component for any application in life sciences. The polarizers are made according to customer wishes in different sizes, shapes, thicknesses and quantity in the required wavelength range.
European Sensor Systems specializes in the development of silicon-based modules utilizing micro-electronic technologies. Its prime scope of work is to design, develop and produce customer-specific MEMS modules via standard industrial processes employed for medical, industrial and aerospace applications. ESS’s MEMS-based products are flow systems for gases including oxygen, silicon capacitive pressure sensors for gases and liquids underpinned by ESS’s innovative microfabrication process, capacitive accelerometers and signal conditioning electronics.
Exceet electronics GmbH is an experienced specialist for industrialized and automated development and manufacturing of high-quality and complex electronic modules, components and systems. In medical technology for example, they adopt the overall responsibility for the development and manufacturing of medical devices and support their admission. Exceet electronics is a wholly reliable outsourcing partner and general contractor, which is developing, producing and assembling MedTec devices according ISO 13485.
Fraunhofer Institute for Silicon Technology ISIT develops and manufactures components and systems for microelectronics and microsystem technology. At COMPAMED 2017 Fraunhofer ISIT will present mobile multiparameter analysis systems for point-of-care diagnostics and new developments for sports, medical, safety and automotive applications. Examples are self-sufficient force sensor shoe inserts for acoustic gait analysis or hybrid electronics systems for physical movement monitoring.
The activity portfolio of ILFA Industrieelektronik und Leiterplattenfertigung aller Art GmbH comprises all services starting from CAD, manufacturing prototypes up to middle series volumes of 1 to over 32 layers standard rigid, flex or rigid-flex PCB´s. CSEM Centre Suisse d’Electronique et de Microtechnique SA is a Swiss privately owned non-profit R&D company. At COMPAMED 2017, Hahn-Schickard will show, among other things: an ultra-precision tool insert for the production of a microlens array; high-precision microfluidic tools and injection-molded microfluidic systems; printed electrochemical sensors; ultra-light flexible microsystems based on films; Rapid Prototyping of MID by additive manufacturing and laser soldering; a novel injection device for intradermal administration of drugs.

IVAM Microtechnology Network is an international association with members in the fields of microtechnology, nanotechnology, advanced materials and photonics. IVAM supports mainly small and medium-sized companies in bringing innovative technologies and products to market and thus securing advantages in international competition. Since 1995 IVAM has been supporting companies and institutions from all around the world. The central mission of the association is to create synergies and to support its members in exchanging knowledge, initiating joint projects and networking with each other and potential customers.
In the BMWi-funded network project ToGeTher, small and medium-sized companies have joined forces to develop marketable medical technology products in trustful cooperation. ToGeTher connects SMEs with research organizations and with healthcare providers. With more than 100 players from industry, research and healthcare ToGeTher addresses the flourishing markets „Wearables“ and „Point-of-Care-Diagnostics“. In particular, new technologies are to be used as they are made available, for example, by TOLAE. TOLAE (Thin, Organic and Large Area Electronics) comprises electronic solutions that enable flexible or even stretchable applications and can be manufactured in a cost-effective manner, for example in a roll-to-roll process. The network is constantly being expanded in order to be able to carry out projects comprehensively and competently.
