Experts publish European Clinical Guidlines on Diagnosing and Treatment of Tic Disorders

By publishing the European clinical guidelines for Tourette Syndrome and other tic disorders in “European Child & Adolescent Psychiatry“ for the first time high European standards on the clinical care of tic disorders are provided. Prof. Veit Roessner, head of the Department of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry of the University of Dresden Medical School, Germany, coordinated the development of the guidelines. The Guidelines Group of the “European Society for the Study of Tourette Syndrome“ (ESSTS) developed four guideline papers on assessment, pharmacologic treatment, behavioral treatment and deep brain stimulation for children, adolescents and adults with tic disorders. Unfortunately, especially in terms of pharmacotherapy the base of evidence is limited and further studies are urgently required.
