Cardiac arrhythmias are considered to be one of the main causes of sudden cardiac death. In the „Multimodal Fiber Optic Probe for Highly Resolved in Vivo Localization of Cardiac Fibrosis“ (MultiFib) project, the Jena research team is working with partners from the Medical University of Vienna and the Institute for Rhythmology and Cardiac Modeling (Liryc) in Bordeaux, which specializes in the research and treatment of cardiac arrhythmias. „We want to develop catheters that can be used where the arrhythmia occurs,“ explains project leader Iwan Schie from Leibniz IPHT. „At the same time, they will be able to monitor in real time during the operation whether ablation therapy in which these critical sites are sclerosed is successful. The European Commission is funding MultiFib under the ERA-NET programme in Horizon 2020 until April 2021.
